Select Committee on China Chairman John Moolenaar (R-MI), Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-MA), and Congresswoman Young Kim (R-CA), alongside Senators Ed Markey (D-MA), Ted Budd (R-NC), John Curtis (R-UT), and Adam Schiff (D-CA), have introduced a resolution condemning the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for its arbitrary or wrongful detention of American academics on baseless charges. The resolution urges the United States government to prioritize the safe return of all American citizens unlawfully or wrongfully detained in China, including Dr. Youlin Chen and American scholar Min Zin, among other measures.
House Select Committee on China Chairman John Moolenaar (R-MI), Select Committee Ranking Member Ro Khanna (D-CA), and Congresswoman Young Kim (R-CA) released a statement with multiple U.S. Senators, led by the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Senator Jim Risch (R-ID) and Ranking Member Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), condemning China's move:
The Chinese Communist Party's dystopian and deceptively-named "Ethnic Unity and Progress Law," is set to go into force on July 1.
“This law is an ugly escalation of the CCP’s cruelty and paranoia, and China plans to use it to continue its harassment and intimidation of critics who live beyond its borders. China will also use it to further perpetuate atrocities and to legitimize its abuse of Tibetans, Uyghurs, and other people of faith, as well as people it classifies as minority nationalities. This week as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our independence, the CCP is going backwards and showing once again it does not believe in the God-given rights we enjoy. The true national unity the CCP seeks comes not from oppression, but from citizens freely living and worshipping as they please,” said Chairman John Moolenaar of the Select Committee on China.
WASHINGTON, D.C.-- Over the weekend, Chairman John Moolenaar (R-MI) and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party wrote to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen following the prison sentencing of 45 pro-freedom activists in Hong Kong last week. As human rights deteriorate under CCP rule and financial transactions between Hong Kong, Russia, and North Korea persist, the lawmakers seek a briefing from Treasury Department officials on potential actions the U.S. will take.
