Young Kim (R-CA), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Indo Pacific, today sent a letter to Secretary of the Navy, Carlos Del Toro, calling on the Navy to speed up the production and sale of weapons Taiwan needs to defend itself in the instance of a Chinese Communist Party invasion, like Harpoon and SLAM-ER missiles.

“The Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) latest decision to restrict exports of graphite, a key electric vehicle battery material, underscores the need to quickly diversify our supply chains away from the People's Republic of China and shore up collective resilience with our partners and allies. The CCP’s weaponization of trade over supply chain “chokepoints” illustrates the urgency to pass legislation that counters economic coercion and creates new tools to respond to the actions of the CCP.”
WASHINGTON, DC – Chairman Mike Gallagher today released the statement below on Chinese Coast Guard and maritime militia vessels ramming Philippine Coast Guard and resupply ships carrying supplies to troops stationed on the BRP Sierra Madre in the Second Thomas Shoal.
“On two separate occasions over the weekend, vessels of the Chinese Coast Guard and maritime militia forces rammed Philippine ships operating legally in the South China Sea. The Chinese Communist Party’s dangerous, and illegal, attacks against our ally are completely unacceptable It is time to take additional measures to support our commitments under the U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty, including by assisting the Philippines in establishing a more secure and permanent foothold on the Second Thomas Shoal.”
