Green, MD (R-TN), Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security Chairman Carlos Gimenez (R-FL), and Subcommittee on Counterterrorism, Law Enforcement, and Intelligence Chairman August Pfluger (R-TX), along with Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Chairman Mike Gallagher (R-WI), deepened their joint investigation into security vulnerabilities in the U.S. maritime sector, particularly relating to CCP cybersecurity and supply chain risks. 

WASHINGTON, DC – Chairman Mike Gallagher (R-WI) of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party wrote to Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro, expressing concern about the lack of a clear plan for storing and distributing fuel for American forces operating across the Indo-Pacific. In 2022, DoD ordered the Red Hill fuel storage facility in Hawaii to be defueled due to leaks that contaminated the drinking water on the island of Oahu. Red Hill previously stored up to 250 million gallons of fuel that could support American forces in the Indo-Pacific. It remains unclear how the Navy will replace Red Hill’s capacity and redistribute fuel in the region, a growing risk as the Chinese military threat to Taiwan grows.

The Chairs made requests for documents to UCLA, the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD).

Mike Gallagher (R-WI), Chairman of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, sent a letter to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo raising serious concerns about export control risks for Emirati artificial intelligence firm, Group 42 Holdings (G42), and their extensive business relationships with Chinese military companies, state-owned entities, and the PRC intelligence services. The letter calls on Commerce to closely examine G42 and its subsidiaries for inclusion on the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) Entity List.

Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Co-Chair, Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR), sent a letter to Secretary Antony Blinken following the Hong Kong authorities' issuance of bounties on pro-democracy advocates, including a U.S. citizen and a U.S. resident. The letter urges Secretary Blinken to impose sanctions on the Hong Kong and CCP officials who placed these bounties and facilitated this flagrant transnational repression.
