HarmonyOS and OpenHarmony are operating systems developed by Huawei as an alternative to the current leading mobile operating systems developed by Google (Android) and Apple (iOS), as well as desktop operating systems such as those developed by Microsoft (Windows). HarmonyOS and OpenHarmony are also intended for use in products other than smartphones, tablets, and computers, including connected vehicles and smart devices.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Chairman John Moolenaar (R-MI) and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) are urging the Department of Commerce to expand the role of the U.S. AI Safety Institute (AISI) to directly confront the mounting national security threat posed by China’s artificial intelligence advancements.
In a letter to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, the lawmakers emphasized that “there is a strong national security need for better understanding, predicting, and preparing for the PRC’s AI progress.”

The lawmakers argue that such labeling contradicts longstanding U.S. policy and lends false legitimacy to the Chinese Communist Party’s claims over Taiwan.
“The current practice, with implicit reference to Taiwan being a part of China, stands in stark contrast to the position of the United States government—to the detriment of Taiwan, a thriving democracy and one of America’s top trading partners,” said Chairman Moolenaar and Senator Blackburn.
