Transfer Portal News: China’s Money
The Department of Education has released a new online portal where the American people can see how much foreign money is being given to American universities. The portal – which is online at foreignfundinghighered.gov – lists China as the fourth biggest foreign contributor, giving more than $4 billion to American universities. China moves to second on the list when including an additional $1.9 billion from Hong Kong.
“Secretary McMahon and the Trump administration have done tremendous work to bring transparency to our universities. Through this portal we can all see that China has given nearly $6 billion to our nation’s universities in order to transfer critical research, influence, and academic talent to China,” said Select Committee on China Chairman John Moolenaar. “Passing the SAFE Research Act and the DETERRENT Act will protect students and the taxpayer-funded research being done on our nation’s campuses.”
The top three recipients of money from mainland China were New York University, Harvard University, and Stanford University. The top three recipients of money from Hong Kong were Harvard, Yale University, and Stanford.
Last year, the Select Committee released investigations on research security and China’s malign influence on campus – Fox in the Henhouse, Joint Institutes, Divided Loyalties, and Ph.D. to PLA.
