Moolenaar: Removing a Chinese Ally from Power Makes the World a Safer Place

January 3, 2026

Select Committee on China Chairman John Moolenaar made the following statement on the arrest of Venezuelan cartel leader Nicolas Maduro and China’s influence in the Western Hemisphere:

“The Trump Administration’s decisive action against Nicolas Maduro removes a Chinese ally from power and makes the world a safer place. China’s partnership with Maduro propped up an authoritarian ruler who worked with our nation’s adversaries and hurt the American people. China is actively working against us in Central and South America and those who choose to work with Xi Jinping should note that he could not save Maduro from defeat. The Select Committee will continue to investigate how China is trying to threaten America’s national security interests in the Western Hemisphere, and we will work within Congress and alongside the Trump Administration and our allies to prevent it."
