Moolenaar Meets with Family of Wrongfully Detained U.S. Citizen Min Zin

September 25, 2026

Today, Chairman John Moolenaar of the Select Committee on China met with the family of wrongfully detained U.S. citizen Min Zin. Min Zin was detained upon arrival at the airport in Kunming, Yunnan Province, on June 3, 2026. He was lured by a Chinese institution to attend an academic conference. Chinese authorities accused him of espionage and endangering national security. Min Zin's family denies the charges, and the U.S. government has designated him as wrongfully detained under the Robert Levinson Hostage Recovery and Hostage-Taking Accountability Act.

“Min Zin's family is strong and longs for the day he will be reunited with them. I share their steadfast resolve, and I am calling for his immediate release. As President Trump meets with Xi Jinping, my hope is that he tells Xi to immediately release Min Zin, and all Americans from wrongful detention," said Moolenaar. “This tragic story exemplifies how the Chinese Communist Party uses Americans as hostages for diplomatic negotiations and refuses to act in good faith. All Americans, particularly in academia, should heed this story and seriously reconsider any plans to travel to China.”
