House Passes Moolenaar-Supported Resolution Urging Release of CCP’s Political Prisoners
Today, the House of Representatives passed a bipartisan resolution calling on President Trump to prioritize the release of prisoners of conscience unjustly detained by the Chinese Communist Party in future engagements with Xi Jinping. The resolution, which was introduced by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) was cosponsored and supported by Select Committee on China Chairman John Moolenaar.
“No government has the right to imprison a person for their beliefs, their faith, or their voice. This resolution makes clear the United States will not be silent as the Chinese Communist Party detains courageous individuals for exercising their fundamental freedoms. These individuals are not criminals; they are voices for truth and human dignity. We must continue to press for their release and ensure their cases remain a priority in U.S. engagements with Xi Jinping and the CCP,” said Moolenaar.
The resolution calls for diplomatic efforts to secure the release of Jimmy Lai, Gulshan Abbas, Jin Mingri, Gao Quanfu, and his wife Pang Yu, all of whom have been detained under circumstances widely condemned by human rights organizations and the international community.
House Resolution 1259 also calls for proof of life, access to legal counsel, family communication, and medical care for detainees, reaffirming the United States’ longstanding commitment to defending political and religious freedom.
